GUIDANCE

I'm a 3rd year chemical engineering student. What are the skills/competencies I need to develop to get a good placement?

The best time is now…

First of all make sure that your concepts of the subjects in Chemical Engineering are crystal clear. Start revisiting the subjects you studied earlier (in previous 2 years of engineering) and at the same time focus on the subjects you are currently studying (Third and final year constitutes most important subjects in Chemical Engineering). This would at the same time help you in preparing for GATE exam.

Develop a problem solving attitude, ask your self questions whenever you learn some new topic. (This will help you a lot in your career)

Read newspapers to get the idea of all the current development going on in the world as well as in our industry. (This helps a lot in interviews)

Prepare for aptitude test of the companies (You can do this in final year also) it won't take much time.

Start preparing for the GD and Interviews.

Try doing an internship as that experience can help you a lot during interviews. (You will be able to relate the concepts in Chemical Engineering much better after the internship)

If possible try to do some project work at your institute in the subject of your interest.

You can also learn some softwares such as Aspen etc. (This would help you when you apply for plant design and automation companies)

Apart from this, I would say study every subject well (as all subjects are equally important) and master those subjects which you are interested in.

This would surely help you get a good placement.

What are the necessary skill sets I should develop to be a good chemical engineer?

1. communication skills - especially if you are in manyfactuing team. You will spend half of your time communicating with operators for technical support, meeting with peer Chemical engineers for project design, work with SHE engineers for DOE regulation, and weekly present your work to your boss. It is still quite challenging for me as an international student. I don't really have any tips for this but practice.

2. project management skills - Since there are always multiple projects going on and interns/operators making mistakes, losing their tracks or delivering unpleasant results. Tips: I'm working on an Intro to PM class on Coursera and feels like learning.

3. Proficiency in AutoCAD (or other drafting software), Basic coding(I saw my supervisor coding process receipt but do not remember so much about it.), and of course Windows Office.

4. Try to get a Professional Engineering Certificate, starting with Fundamentals of Engineering certificate if you are still in college as I do. I heard mixed opinions of the true value of these certificates, but they never hurt.

5. To know a variety of industrial equipments, their functions are more handy than your calculation. One supervisor once had me calculate the releasing flow velocity from a pressurized nozzle into a cap mixing with air. After I made multiple ideal assumptions and got the result, he introduced something called HotWire Anemometer. That was quite a FML moment.

6. And abundant chemistry knowledge. ChemE will cover the tech transfering and scaling from R&D. Thus valid understanding of the chemical reaction process is necessary.
